The Analysis of “Communication Strategies” Used by Intermediate Japanese Learners

The purpose of this research is to analyze the “Communication Strategies” used by Japanese language learners. In particular, the analysis will focus on “Communication Strategies” which are used by Japanese learners as a speaker. The informants were eight native English speakers that had been studying Japanese at university in Japan. Their level of Japanese was intermediate. The data was taken from interviews done four month after coming to Japan.The interviewer was a native Japanese woman. The interviews were recorded on tape and were transcribed as data in this research. From the analysis, these results are clarified; 1) intermediate learners can use strategies effectively, 2) there is a variety of strategies which are useful and effective, 3) the cause of failure in “direct appeal” 4) the effectiveness of strategies use is determined by Japanese language level, and 5 ) elementary and intermediate learners use strategies differently
